More Proof of Post-Christian America

Those who need more proof of the reality of Post-Christian America should look at Gallup’s annual Values and Beliefs poll for 2019.

Gallup’s data shows most Americans’ beliefs on several issues run counter to traditional Christian doctrine. For instance:

  • 92% of Americans find birth control morally acceptable.
  • 77% of Americans view Divorce as morally acceptable.
  • 71% of Americans think heterosexual sex between unmarried adults is morally acceptable.
  • 64% of Americans believe having a baby outside of marriage is morally acceptable.
  • Embryonic stem cell research is morally acceptable to a 64% of Americans.
  • 63% of Americans find homosexual sex morally acceptable.
  • The death penalty is morally acceptable for 60% of Americans.
  • Even euthanasia; doctor-assisted suicide, is morally acceptable for 52%, or more than half, of all Americans.
  • Oddly, 53% of Americans think buying and wearing clothing made of animal fur is wrong.
  • Additionally, 51% of Americans believe medical testing on animals is wrong.

Is the Definition of Christianity Changing?

Consequently, most Americans; including the 60% who call themselves Christians, hold beliefs that are not Christian. Therefore, Americans are no longer Christian or the definition of Christianity is changing.

For instance, historic Christianity shows little concern for animals or animal rights. Yet many American Christians now believe morality and rights extend to animals.

A belief that will make some conservative theologians cringe. To clarify, the modern concept of animal rights is getting close to the non-Christian belief that animals have souls.

America’s Strange New Morality

Conversely Gallup’s pollsters found there are some bizarre vestiges of traditional Christian doctrine left in the American psyche. For example:

  • 50% of Americans still believe abortion is wrong.
  • 58% of Americans believe sex between teenagers is wrong.
  • 66% of Americans believe cloning animals is morally wrong.
  • 61% of Americans find pornography morally unacceptable.
  • 79% of Americans think suicide is immoral.
  • 80% of Americans believe polygamy is morally wrong.
  • 85% of Americans consider the concept of cloning humans wrong.
  • 89% of Americans think extramarital affairs are wrong.

America Rejects Traditional Christian Mortality

Gallup’s results show Americans are treating Christian morality like a buffet. To explain, they’re choosing the morality they want, and discarding the rest.

I do not know what this belief system is, but it is not the traditional Christian morality. Although, C. S. Lewis would probably label it Post-Christian, and theologian Dr. Albert R. Mohler Jr calls it “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.” Many traditional conservatives; and old-school atheists, on the other hand, will call it hypocrisy.

There is one certainty; however, a new morality is evolving in America. Everybody needs to understand this new morality even if you do not approve of it.

They based the Gallup results on a poll conducted between 1 May and 12 May 2019. You can see the full results here.
