Finally, all the effective presidents had one thing in common. They concentrated their efforts a few big goals they knew were doable.
Polk, understood he could not solve the problem of slavery so he ignored it. However, westward expansion was doable so he concentrated on that.

Trump is making no effort to sell the the war to the American people or justify his actions on Iran. Plus, the neoconservatives are going along with him.This is a frightening development because it shows the warmongers think they no longer need the support or tolerance of the American people. Instead, the neoconservatives believe they have carte blanche to attack other countries, go to war, and flaunt international law.

Thus, Polk succeeded because he had a realistic opinion of American military power and its limits. Unlike presidents Lyndon B. Johnson (D-Texas); Madison, and George W. Bush (R-Texas) Polk knew America is not invincible and can lose wars.
