Is Visa (V) Making Money?

Visa (V) is the world’s largest payment platform. To demonstrate Statista reports there were 755 million Visa cards in circulation worldwide in 1st Quarter 2018. In particular, there were 342 million Visa cards in the United States in 1st Quarter 2018.

In contrast Statista estimates there were 244 million PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) accounts worldwide in 2nd Quarter 2018. Correspondingly, Statista estimates there were 127 million Apple Pay users worldwide in 2017. Importantly, many of these Apple Pay users are making payments with Visa through Apple Pay.

Therefore, Visa (V) has a vast advantage over any potential competitor. Its platform is almost six times as large as Apple Pay and over three times as large as PayPal’s.

Google Tez Becomes Google Pay

The Tez rebranding is likely to convince Walmart not to accept NFC payments. Instead, Walmart will demand that Alphabet and Apple adopt QR Code.

Google Pay is likely to roll out QR Code in the United States. That will force Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to add QR code to Apple Pay. A natural consequence of Google Pay QR Code is PayPal adopting QR Code. The addition of QR Code to Venmo is inevitable too.

The tech giants will have to go along because Walmart is on track to generate $500.34 billion (half a trillion dollars) in revenues in 2018, Statista forecast. Access to that revenue is probably what convinced Alphabet to add QR Code to Google Pay.

Strangely enough, Hong Kong consumers liked WeChat Pay better but used Apple Pay more.

Only 8% of respondents admitted to using WeChat Pay, 16% used Ant Financial’s Alipay, and 17% used Alphabet’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google Pay.

Even though WeChat Pay was number three; it had the highest customer satisfaction rating of 7.7 out of 10 points, Apple Pay was number two with 7.6 points.
