The Destructive Kavanaugh Hearings will lead to Impeachment

America just crossed a political line with the Senate’s U.S. Supreme Court hearings for Judge Brett Kavanaugh. I have the feeling something important changed but I cannot determine what it is.

The Kavanaugh Hearings mark the beginning of a destructive battle that will reshape Americans politics and the judiciary. I fear this battle because of the stupid and disgusting behavior of Senators from both parties. To enumerate, here is what troubles me most about the Kavanuagh hearings:

The Democrats will try to Impeach Kavanaugh

The Democrats are obviously preparing case for the impeachment of Kavanaugh. To explain they are portraying Kavanaugh as unfit for the court to justify his removal.

I think a Kavanaugh impeachment is probable – if Democrats get control of the Senate in 2019 or 2021. The Constitution provides for Supreme Court impeachment; even though it has not occurred since 1805. Tellingly, politics motivated the last Supreme Court Impeachment that of Samuel Chase.

Interestingly, there is another good reason for Democrats to impeach Kavanaugh. It enables them to avoid impeaching President Donald J. Trump (R-New York).

In the first place, the Democratic base is howling for blood and screaming for impeachment. Obviously, Congress can placate the mob by throwing a prominent Republican to it.

Additionally, impeaching a Supreme Court Justice who could serve 40 or 50 years makes far more sense removing a President. To clarify, the president only serves four to eight years. Accordingly, a Kavanaugh impeachment is far more logical than a Trump impeachment.

Significantly, some Democrats outside the Senate are demanding Kavanaugh impeachment, Vox notes. Even if impeachment is not what they want, Senate Democrats are painting themselves into that corner.

Today’s Senate Democrats remind me of the Republicans in the 1990s who got so worked up in hatred for U.S. President Bill Clinton (D-Arkansas) they tried to impeach him. Importantly, spurious allegations based on a sex scandal motivated the Clinton impeachment debacle, just like the Kavanaugh mess.

Democrats’ Behavior at the Kavanaugh Hearings is Destructive

The Democrats’ behavior in this affair has been irresponsible and morally indefensible.

Specifically, the Democrats knew of the allegations against Kavanaugh long before the hearings began. Yet they refused to make the allegations public or tell the White House about them for dubious political reasons.

Tellingly, even former San Francisco Mayor and California House Speaker Willie Brown admits this in The San Francisco Chronicle. For instance, Brown believes U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) should have sent a letter accusing Kavanaugh to the FBI rather than leaking it. Significantly, Brown is a Democrat.

Had President Donald J. Trump (R-New York) known of the allegations he might have withdrawn the Kavanaugh nomination, for example. America might have been spared this tawdry spectacle.

Now, we face the potential of a sexual predator on the nation’s highest court and Democrats are to blame. No matter how you look at it that is reprehensible.

The Democrats will Profit Politically from the Kavanaugh Hearings

The Democrats will reap significant political benefits from these hearings. For instance, they will associate Republicans with sexual assault right before the Congressional elections.

The hearings will divide Republicans. Many Republicans only supported Trump because party leaders assured them he would appoint the Supreme Court justices they wanted. Now he the President is not even achieving that modest goal.

Obviously, that will increase the suspicion and distrust average Republicans have for their party’s leadership. Rank and file Republicans already view their leaders as corrupt and dishonest. After this debacle, they will see the Grand Old Party’s (GOP) leaders as incompetent.

An obvious side effect of the Kavanaugh hearings will be to suppress Republican votes. As an illustration many Republican women; and some cultural conservatives, will stay away from the polls. That already happened last year in Alabama; where some Republicans refused to support Roy Moore in a U.S. Senate race the GOP lost.

In particular, Democrats won that race because they exposed Roy Moore’s ugly sexual history.  Obviously, Democrats have good reason to repeat that strategy on the eve of an important Congressional election.

Therefore, the Democrats will win the Kavanaugh hearings even if the judge gets nominated. Democrats will win because no matter what happens Republicans look terrible. Worst of all, the Republicans look bad even though Democrats behavior has been reprehensible.

Senate Leaders Fail to Grasp the Importance of the Kavanaugh Hearings

The bothersome aspect of the Kavanaugh hearings is the cluelessness of some Senate leaders. It sounds as if some Senators do not grasp the significance of the events or today’s America.

For instance, Feinstein reportedly said the hearings are not a political event? A proceeding of an elected body held a little over a month before an important election not political? That is just ridiculous.

Worse are Senators like Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) who are blithely ignoring popular rage about sexual assault. I have to wonder what century these guys are living in.

I must ask have these people read a newspaper; or watched the news, in the past five years? Particularly, have they heard of Harvey Weinstein, or Bill Cosby, or the “Me Too Movement?”

Moreover, I have to wonder just how divorced from reality the U.S. Senate is. Is the gulf between the Senators and average Americans now so wide, the Senate is incapable of governing the nation?

The Democrats have won the Kavanaugh Hearings

Worst of all, the Democrats have won the political battle. That is bad because the tactics Democrats used to win were utterly despicable.

The havoc wreaked by politicizing assault, appointing an alleged sexual predator to the nation’s high court, and weaponizing the hearing process is incalculable. Such tactics will become the political norm provided that Democrats win control of Congress in November.

American politics is about to become far more disgusting because of the Kavanaugh mess.

The Kavanaugh Hearings Battle is far from Over

Importantly, the battle is from over no matter what happens. The ugly war over the Supreme Court will sink to new lows.

Therefore, expect to see a serious of vicious battles over the Supreme Court that will reshape the American judiciary. Only history will tell us if those developments will be good.

Furthermore, I have to wonder if the process of selecting Supreme Court justices has become hopelessly politicized. If that is the case; the U.S. Supreme Court will not function properly, because of the damage. In particular, Americans will not accept rulings by justices they view as political hacks.

Under those circumstances, only drastic reform will fix the process. I have to wonder where that reform will come from. One thing is clear the leadership required for that reform will not come from the present U.S. Senate.
