How the Woke Wars Threaten Human Rights
On the surface, the Woke Wars appear to be a standard left/right ideological skirmish with one side trying to silence those whom it finds distasteful. When you examine it through the lens of human rights; however, the Woke Wars appear far more sinister and dangerous.
To explain, the Woke Wars are the conflict between some artists; mostly stand-up comedians, and the self-appointed left-wing arbiters of morality trying to censor them. The Woke Wars erupted a few years back when college campuses and other venues began censoring comedy acts.
Essentially, the Woke Warriors try to force all artists to adhere to contemporary standards of political correctness on issues such as gender, race, and sexual orientation. Comedians often run afoul of the Woke Censors when they mention race or gender in jokes.
Most people dismiss the Woke Wars as another meaningless ideological squabble over political correctness. Unfortunately, the Woke Warriors are crossing over into the dangerous territory of violating human rights.
How the Woke Warriors violate Human Rights
The Woke Warriors are not throwing people into dungeons, torturing, or building concentration camps. However, you can make a strong case that the Woke Warriors violate human rights.
For instance, Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:
“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive andimpart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” *
The Woke Warriors; however, believe many people including racists, sexists, and those who disagree with them do not have a right to freedom of opinion and expression. Moreover, the Woke Warriors attempt to prevent individuals from disseminating opinions they find offensive.
When the Woke Warriors tell a comic, he cannot tell certain jokes, they are violating the comedian’s human rights. Worse, the Woke Warriors want to block the comic’s access to media. Many of them want to keep any comic they see as offensive off of television, the internet, and other media.
Furthermore, the Woke Warriors want to prevent people who express opinions they find offensive from working. For instance, the Woke will prevent certain comics, actors, and other artists from working at many venues.
That violates Article 23 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states: “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.”*
Thus, the Woke Warriors try to deprive people of the right to work at their chosen professions. A right the Universal Declaration recognizes.
Finally, Article 27 the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.”*
The Woke Warriors; however, try to prevent many people from participating in the “cultural life of the community.” Telling a joke, or attending a comedy act, is part of the cultural life of the community or country.
Thus, when the Woke Warriors try to ban certain kinds of comedy, they violate human rights. Notably, the Woke Warriors are systematically violating several provisions of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Woke War on Human Rights
Thus, the Woke Warriors try to deprive large segments of the population of human rights.
The right to tell a dirty or offensive joke is a human right. The right to listen to that dirty or offensive joke and interpret it with your own mind is an even more important human right.
The Woke Warriors want to deprive us of both those rights. First, they deprive people of the right to be offensive and the right of expressing themselves. Second, the warriors deprive everybody else of the right of deciding what is offensive.
Everybody needs to pay attention to the Woke Wars because they are about far more than comedy. In the final analysis, the Woke Wars are about human rights. Make no mistake, the Woke Warriors intend to deprive everybody of his or her human rights in the name of political correctness and fairness.
