Developing and building the electromagnet removes the greatest technological hurdle to completing Commonwealth’s SPARC fusion reactor. The SPARC is the fusion reactor Commonwealth’s executives claim they can build by 2025.
Scientists are planning an upgrade to the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator that could allow it to generate temperatures of 30 million degrees centigrade (54 million degrees Fahrenheit). Analysis of the earlier experiments shows they can adjust the Stellarator’s magnetic field cage to prevent a variety of heat loss known as neoclassical transport. Physicists think such adjustments can prevent enough heat loss to double the Wendelstein 7-X ‘s heat output.
Scientists think the laser briefly ignited a chain reaction they call plasma burning, FutureTimeLine claims. In plasma burning, the fusion reactions get hot enough to trigger more fusion reactions. The hope is to use the laser to trigger a self-sustaining fusion reaction that can generate power.

There is no evidence that Helion has achieved fusion. Instead, the company has reached an important milestone on the road to fusion.
Initial results from the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) test show the Super-X Diverter works, a UKAEA press release claims. The UKAEA claims the Super-X could “make compact fusion power plants commercially viable.”
