Best Buy is at the Mercy of Fortnite

Fortnite’s effect on Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) shows how dependent brick and mortar businesses are becoming on digital media. In particular, popular digital entertainments like videos and video games are impacting retail sales.

Will Best Buy Die?

By acquiring Great Call, Best Buy is competing directly with Apple, Amazon, and indirectly with Alphabet. I cannot see how Best Buy can win that battle.
I see two big problems with Great Call that can make it a drain on Best Buy’s bottom line.
Great Call is a direct marketing company. It sells specific products directly through various channels. Best Buy is a general-purpose retailer that sells a wide variety of products and services through brick and mortar stores. I do not see the synergy there.

Those stores would serve as ideal locations for people to see and test Amazon merchandise and get familiar with new Amazon products such as Echo, Amazon TV, Kindle, and Fire. Best Buy could serve as Amazon’s answer to the Apple Store.

Would Amazon buy Sears or Nordstrom?

This does not mean Amazon would not buy a department store. I can certainly picture it acquiring Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN); which has a “best in the industry” reputation, and a loyal customer following much like Whole Foods. It also likes to implement next generation retail practices like setting up “storefronts” for online merchants and Tesla dealerships in its stores.
